The Museum

During our research into modernist architecture we came across a wonderful building located in Canada. The Frederic Wood Theatre on the Vancouver Campus of the University of British Columbia was built in 1963 and is a shining example to modernist architecture.

Design by the firm Thompson, Berwick & Pratt the building’s exterior is textured concrete with relief to the concrete walls coming from the landscape and the glazed entrance. Its ornamental grid of wood covers large glass panels. The building won a Massey Medal for architecture.

This building is named after Frederic Wood, founder of the UBC Players' Club, as a tribute to his major contribution to the development of theatre in B.C.

Frederic Wood Theatre, Vancouver, Canada.

Not only is the building a beautiful one, it can also translate well to Lego pieces of the 1960s. Using the Stud.io package from Bricklink we designed our version of the Frederic Wood Theatre. Instead of a theatre, we’ll call our building a museum.

We used the 1 x 1 x 2 (old type) windows to replicate the “lattice” work in the walls. We are yet to investigate if we can source that many but this is just a prototype, we’ll concentrate on what works for the design first.

The Museum is 48 studs wide, 30 studs deep and 15 bricks (and 4 plates high). This prototype design has 821 bricks in total.

The columns are made from 1 x 1 bricks, if the structural integrity isn’t there to hold up the cantilever roof we may need to use 1 x 1 x 5 bricks, not strictly from the 1960s era but they may be necessary. We’ll also make those ‘posts’ flush with the edges of the roof plates for additional structural integrity.
