A 1960s Lego town waiting to be built

<< Back to The Discovery

As we continue our investigation we have uncovered a crucial key to the earliest of the Lego pieces.

Hidden among a number of flyers is a lovely little flyer describing the value of Lego to your child's creative development.

With over 17.8 million Google search returns for "vintage Lego" we now have a search term to narrow down our research: "Town Plan Set #810".

Included in the Town Plan Set was a thick cardboard base that served as the city streetscape. This one sealed the deal, we have in our possession a gorgeous, partially-complete, Lego Town Plan set, with a production date of somewhere around 1962.

The Town Plan Set was released between 1959 and 1962 across the United Kingdom, continental Europe and Australia, with the US version was released a little later under the dual branding with Samsonite.

The version we have was most likely purchased in the UK - given the board configuration and the fact our neighbours were British ex-pats.

The boy in this image is Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the grandson of the creator and founder of Lego, Ole Kirk Christiansen. Kjeld is now the owner of the Lego Group and vice-chairman of the board, while maintaining his role as chairman of the board of KIRKBI A/S, Lego Holding A/S and the Lego Foundation.

But unfortunately, we are box-less - I suspect like lots of Lego packaging it was damaged through normal wear and tear and ended up in the great rubbish bin in the sky...

The Lego Town Plan Set #810 in all it's glory (although this one is missing the display inlays in the compartments).

A detail of how the Town Plan Set looked in the box.

So we inch closer to identifying the set as the Town Plan Set with other assorted additions. We are though rather intrigued by the cars and the little plastic cyclists...

POSTSCRIPT #1

In July, 2016 we acquired an additional board, we have plenty of bricks, minifigs and cars, enough to fill 2 baseboards.

We now have 2 baseboards to work with.
