"Waffle" bottoms

<< Back to The Discovery

In our previous instalment we outlined how we came to be in possession of a long lost collection of vintage Lego.

But what exactly do we have and how old is it?

Our first task is to sort the pieces and look for clues as to what set(s) we have. The first clue to the era of the Lego is the bottom and the curved shape of the whites plates.

The 'waffle' design on the bottom of the plates is a clue to the age of the Lego.

Doing some internet research we are able to narrow these down as the "waffle" design, found in sets from the late 1950s and early/mid 1960s (see the toys period website). The curved shape of the plate was exclusive to sets released in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

In addition, we are lucky enough to have some of the original packaging to draw some context from. Judging by the artwork on the generic set slide cover we feel we are looking at something from the mid-1960s. The Toys period website puts it as the Basic Building Set #040 - unconfirmed release in 1964.

But not only do we have pieces in the collection that aren't included this set, we have many more pieces than the Basic Building Set contained. But it is at least a start – one thing added to the list.

The investigation continues...

CONFIRMED IN THE COLLECTION:
