Our vintage Lego collection

This is the story of how we unearthed a rare collection of Lego from the 1950s and 1960s and built a vintage town to show Lego fans of Australia.

Stumbling across a long-forgotten box of vintage Lego we journey back in time to explore and re-create a 1960s Lego town, complete with original minifigs and seldom-seen cars and trucks. Join us on the research, plan and buildings stages, as we prepare to transport and display the set in lego fan events across Australia.

A Box of Old Lego:

The Collection

The story of how we came to possess some very rare and special vintage Lego and how we went about identifying it, part by part.

The Planning

We had a great collection of vintage Lego and we had the idea of building our very own vintage 1960s Lego city, but what should we build and where are the instructions?

The Buildings

With little or no layered instructions in the 1950s and 1960s, the building process was part research, part "make-it-up-as-we-go".

Our own creations:

Larger Buildings

We wanted to fill our two baseboards with modernist Lego buildings and found inspiration from other vintage collectors, past Lego promotional flyers and real buildings. (Oh, and they had to be big!)

Extra-large Buildings

We had such a great time at both the Melbourne and Sydney Lego shows. With Canberra now on the table we thought maybe it's time to go bigger and attempt some extra large-scale, tall building.

Events:

We've spent 18 months doing research on the bits and pieces in the collection and painstakingly recreating suggested buildings, stand-alone sets and some of our own creations. Now for the fun bit: putting our 1960s set on display for Australian Lego fans.

Expansion Plans

We have been travelling with the 1960s Lego display around the south east Australia for the past two years. It’s time to rest the display for a while and dream up an expansion plan. Whether or not we ever actually do it - who knows if it will eventuate, but as they say: “you gotta have a plan”… Follow us as we dream up what an expanded display could look like.
